Together with Diez Mil Años, an organization and online academy of farmers who promote soil care and health, we held a fascinating webinar on the benefits of agroecology and technology.

What is agroecology?

Agroecology is a set of farming practices that are environmentally friendly and seek to avoid harming the environment.

It's a way of life embraced by thousands of producers around the world.

Agroecology often offers solutions to environmental problems that have been building up for years because of standard conventional farming practices.

The contribution of Diez Mil Años

Diez Mil Años is made up of a group of communicators, farmers, and technicians committed to the production system. They organize and deliver training focused on soil health.

Connectivity is a barrier: a large part of the population has no access to the digital world. The internet is essential today, and many producers don't have access to it. Reaching them is harder, but not impossible.

Technology is a great opportunity, not a threat. There are many free tools; ideally, someone should support you every step of the way.

Agrojusto's contribution

Agrojusto uses technology to give entrepreneurs and producers across the country the chance to take part in a fairer, more efficient food market… And very soon it will reach all of Latin America.

Fair trade and efficiency are our pillars. We developed a system for both retailers and producers: the former can have a free online store, and the latter can have their production valued and sell it at a fair price.

Technology is the chance to improve agriculture and make it work in favor of the environment.

We need to understand that agriculture is a system within a market; it's not just the farmer. For it to last over time, we need to understand that there are other players who must act from within.

Our community is alive and constantly talking. Having close, human contact and communication with people is key.

It's a challenge to understand what matters to producers and to the people on the other side.

On many platforms, bots are answering messages, and it's not the same. Having a real person behind a chat or an email adds a lot to a brand or company.

Summary

Agriculture and technology go hand in hand to improve processes and situations that put the environment at risk and shouldn't be repeated, because they disrupt our ecosystem.

They are also the foundation that unites thousands of people (producers, entrepreneurs, consumers, etc.) committed to a healthier life and to well-being of body and mind.
