First Meeting on Agroecology and Food Sovereignty

In June 2022 we will take part as sponsors, supporting the First Meeting on Agroecology and Food Sovereignty, to be held at the Casa del Bicentenario in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina.

Diálogos desde la Tierra is a wonderful initiative aimed at rural and urban producers and at anyone, including entrepreneurs, connected to agroecological food. The event seeks to deepen our understanding of agroecology through a holistic approach to agroecosystems. Preserving health as a whole is no longer the cause of a few, but a shared responsibility, since life comes from the land, and our connection with it, wherever we are, is the origin of our food. Likewise, agriculture is not a collection of isolated factors but a set of cyclical, dynamic systems. These topics will be explored in depth at this agroecology meeting.

Topics of the Agroecology Meeting

The event focuses on agroecology as a new paradigm for addressing today's challenges.

• Food system: everyone involved in the process; challenges in food production, distribution and access. Appearance and quality, ultra-processed foods and their impact on health. Food fragmentation and polarization.
• Climate crisis and conventional agriculture: environmental impacts, pollution and irreversible loss of biodiversity. Effects of monoculture, agrochemical use and excessive tillage. Communities exposed to spraying. Deforestation, desertification, salinization and loss of organic matter.
• Agro-extractivism: dependence on inputs priced in dollars. Privatization of seeds and the technology package. Consequences for the health of producers, farmworkers and consumers. Exchange-rate effects, speculation and inequality.
• Social exclusion: problems inherent to the current productivist model, including poverty, job insecurity, malnutrition, gender inequality, child exploitation, unemployment and urban overcrowding.
• Loss of traditional peasant knowledge: a crisis of civilization. Homogenization of practices and crops. Loss of territories and landscapes, and its effects on identity.
